The Rent Supplement Program enables low- income households to rent a home in the private sector, a home owned by a housing cooperative, or a home owned by a non-profit organization, and pay rent that is comparable to that for low-rent housing, or rent that is equal to 25% of their income.
According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), a two-bedroom apartment in California's Fair Market Rent (FMR) in 2021 was $2,030. A household must make $6,766 per month, or $81,191 per year, in order to pay this level of rent and utilities without spending more than 30% of their income on housing.
